Church Activities Updated May 2008
MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers)
Mops meets on Tuesday mornings between 10am-12pm. Dads as well as mums and grandparents come with the pre-school children they care for, and many new friendships have been established. The children enjoy creative play, music and craft activities.
Powerpack
Powerpack, which is for children up to the age of 10, meets on Sunday mornings during the 11 o’clock service, and although we meet in the side rooms, Powerpack is very much part of the church’s Sunday worship. Leaders and children attend the first part of the 11am Morning Worship on the 3rd Sunday of each month, and enjoy the all age worship at Family Communion on the 4th Sunday. The teaching comes from a programme called Living Stones which follows the church lectionary.
There are strong links will Cilcoed Christian centre at Meidrim where we meet at the end of every month with other children from Carmarthen, Pendine and surrounding areas. There is excellent teaching and lots of fun in games and craft activities.
Pathfinders
Pathfinders meets at Llandeilo C P school from 3.45-5.30pm on Mondays. Currently about 20 children from Years 4, 5 and 6 in Ysgol Teilo Sant and Llandeilo CP school attend. Pathfinders also go to Cilcoed Christian Centre and enjoy their time there.
Holiday Clubs
St Teilo’s runs a children’s holiday club at Easter, with a guest family service as its climax. In recent years the themes have been: Chattabox, Seaside Rock, Megaquest, Landlubbers, and this Easter, Going Bananas, which catered for 50 children with a staff of 40 volunteers.
Links with Schools
St Teilo’s enjoys good relations with the three local primary schools and Tregib Comprehensive. Our Youth Development Officer, Paul Blackwell, spends much of his time in the schools, where he takes assemblies and lessons, as well as encouraging the Christian Union (Directions) at Tregib.
Rock Solid 1
Rock Solid meets on a Tuesday night from 7.OOpm to 8.30pm using the Youth for Christ programme of the same name which is designed to reach young people from the ages of 11-14 who may not go to church.
RS2
This is also a discipleship programme devised by Youth for Christ and is intended to be used with young people from the age of 11-14 and particularly for those who attend church. The aim is that through games, fun, questions and discussions it will be both enjoyable and challenging to discover what it means to be a Christian and to learn how Christians should live their lives. RS2 is showing young people that their Christian faith is much more than just coming to church on a Sunday.
Youth Alpha
The opening guest supper to launch the new Youth Alpha Course was attended by 18 young people, of whom 12 signed up to do the whole course—and 12 completed it! This group has become the nucleus of the re-launched church Youth Group, who call themselves Backup. The 'new thing' we anticipated that God wanted to do with St Teilo's youth group got off to a great start in 2007; we are looking forward to building on it in future months.
The Alpha Course
The Alpha Course has been run in various ways at St Teilo’s—for example as a lunchtime Alpha, morning coffee alpha, as well as the classic evening meeting with supper, talk and discussion. Alpha now regularly runs in the autumn, beginning with an invitation supper, and including a weekend away. Over the last 12 years it has played a significant role in bringing new people to faith, and reviving and developing the faith of existing church members.
Fellowship Groups
Groups meet for Bible study, prayer and fellowship in the homes of members. In addition, for the past three years, a Parish Lent course has been held in St Teilo’s. A wide range of material has been used over the years. The aim is to encourage discipleship and deepen and inform faith.
A men’s breakfast is held at various times during the year on Saturday Mornings. The aim is to enjoy a more lavish breakfast than most of us are allowed to eat at home (!), to listen to interesting speakers on Christian topics, and to talk.
The Marriage Course
Following a successful piloting of the course on a relatively small scale (with couples meeting in one of their homes), it was decided to promote the course in the local community. Six couples attended the course, which was held in the church hall and began with supper at 7pm, followed by watching the excellent DVD material supplied by Holy Trinity Brompton. The evening is run in such a way as allow each couple to conduct the various exercises privately. We hope to repeat the course next year.
Mothers' Union
The Mothers’ Union branch meets every third Tuesday at 2.30pm for Holy Communion, followed by a talk by a guest speaker, and tea. We participate in Deanery, Archdeaconry and Diocesan MU events, and there is an annual trip to a place of interest. New members, women and men, are always welcome.
Bookstall
The Bookstall sells Bibles, Christian books, CDs, videos, cards and gifts. Titles and resources appropriate to the Church's year are carefully selected, and books, cards and gifts linked to Lent, Mothering Sunday, Easter, and Christmas all sell well. Advent Calendars and Christmas Cards sold in aid of Tearfund are always popular. The Bookstall also provides resources for the Alpha Course. We keep a variety of children's Bibles and books in English and Welsh in stock, as well as resources specially aimed at teens, children, grandchildren and Godchildren. The profits made on sales are all ploughed back into the church and we are grateful to everyone who supports this vital ministry.
Bells and Bellringers
St Teilo’s has six bells, which are rung for the main Sunday services, and for weddings, funerals and festivals. The band practise on Friday evenings, and welcome new ringers, including absolute beginners. We are involved in the St David’s Diocesan Guild, and have recently won the Diocesan striking competition.
Church Flowers
A regular festival team of arrangers decorate the church for Easter, Harvest and Christmas with skill and efficiency. On a weekly basis, one or two members take responsibility for arranging and supplying greenery. The annual Flower and Music festival in July is an important focus of activity.
Music in Worship
We enjoy a variety of styles of worship ranging from a formal Choral Matins at 11am on the first Sunday of every month to a service called Prayer and Praise at 6pm on the second Sunday, which uses contemporary music. At a time when many churches struggle to find an organist or pianist to accompany a service, we have are blessed to have so many talented musicians in our midst.
Compassion, CMS & TearFund
Compassion UK is a Christian child sponsorship organisation dedicated to releasing people from poverty in the developing world. Saint Teilo’s supports the work of Compassion, and members of the congregation are actively engaged in promoting child sponsorship and the other aspects of its work.
The church supports the work of TearFund, and regularly responds to its campaigns and appeals.
St Teilo’s is committed to regular financial support for CMS, and has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with CMS mission partners. Who have included Peter and Gloria Davies, who worked in a mental health clinic in Afghanistan, and latterly Siân Hawkins, working amongst Asian women in Southall.
